It’s my birthday and I’m officially 28 which means that I can’t front about being in my mid twenties anymore lol 😪💖🦂
(Also, this time last year I just got laid off from my dead end permalance job, and now I’m a staff writer at Jezebel…such a massive improvement I can’t even begin to describe. I spent the day getting a facial and getting dinner with friends. TBH this has been my favorite birthday sorry lemme stop before I turn into a massive drip.)
My Halloween costume today was basically faux fangs and a sexy dress. And the teeth got stuck lol.
“Derrick, I’d like you to meet Katinka Ingabogovinanana.”
I know I’m not really around here much these days but I wanted to at least share my Halloween costume from this past weekend. Rob bought a Mugatu costume so I decided to be Katinka. I’m def going to wear the wig IRL sometime.
Forgot to announce it On Here but today was my official first day as a staff writer at Jezebel 🤘🏾
Just realizing I never even posted photos from the issue of Dazed I was in like a couple of years ago holy shit. Uhhhh I’ll do that later???
Listening to Descendents in my room instead of getting my eyebrows done >>>>>
uhhh wow I was cute a few years ago tbh~
I’m actually going through some old Tumblr posts for book research and I can see that there’s a direct correlation between me barely posting on here and when Tumblr got rid of replies for a while in late 2015/early 2016. Then I mostly used Twitter because I like…interaction…and by the time replies came back to Tumblr I was just checked out.
I was in a shoot for @refinery29 recently, rocking a ton of pink mascara and a whole lotta leather <3 Big thanks to @sunnyshokrae for the beautiful photography, and the makeup team for making me feel punk af. Check out the entire post here!
Just bringing this back because I was looking through my Tumblr archive and was like “oh yeah I did THAT.”
Hi!?!?!?!?!

Annual reminder: You’re going to see a lot of people reducing MLK to flowery quotes about love conquering hate and people weaponizing King’s ideology of non-violence against the left. Whether well meaning or blatantly patronizing, it shows a very limited understanding of what MLK lived fighting for and died fighting for. Don’t let America’s short memory delude you into thinking everyone celebrated him; he was labeled a menace, a troublemaker, and a communist (which was a potentially career ending accusation at the time because it meant you were LITERALLY AN ENEMY OF THE STATE), simply because he wanted black people to have more rights, believed the Vietnam War was wrong, and wanted more protections for workers. Please ignore the performative BS and read what the man wrote. ✊🏾
To end this lil rant, I’ll leave you with something he wrote in Letter from a Birmingham Jail that will always resonate: “…the Negro’s great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods of direct action;’ who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.“
And now…I’m 27 🤘🏾
I got laid off today (one day before my birthday 🙃 Gotta love Nu Media). I was a full-time freelancer at this company for years, not salaried/without benefits, so I won’t be receiving a severance package. The struggle is going to be real for a lil bit, but If you support my writing, want to give me a pity donation, or just like my face, I’d love a lil help 💖

I do sometimes, yes! But I really do love it in NYC and plan to stay here for the foreseeable future. Excited to come home for Christmas tho!
